Sweater Pillow Tutorial

June 11, 2009 4:03 pm

Here’s a great and easy tutoiral to make a knit sweater pillow. I had seen a bunch of these at different stores but they were so expensive. But sewing on knit always daunted me. But I tried it and, I’m telling you, it’s easy! I think it’s a great way to take a sweater of someone you love and memorialize them or an old sweater of your childs that you just can’t give away. So here’s what we’re going to do. Get whichever sweater you want.

Cut off the sleeves and any excess you may need to to create straight lines all the way around.

Turn the sweater inside out and pin it ALL the way around. We are going to sew all four sides shut because we will just stuff it from the front buttons. After pinning, Sew all four sides.

Turn the pillow right side out and open the buttons.

Get some stuffing and stuff the pillow as full as you like it.

Now, button the pillow back up.

Here’s what it looks like!!

Didn’t it turn out beautiful!! And it took me 15 minutes!

Here’s the first one I did that’s on my bed.

I hope you all like this project! Let me know what you think!

this is a great gift to someone who has lost a parent or child. A gift of one of the sweaters that their loved one wore, made into a pillow. Or what about a father? Their sweater made into a pillow. Only suggestion is that I would make a separate 'pillow' with the stuffing inside some thin material, so the stuffing doesn't come out of the sweater – and you can remove the 'stuffing pillow' from the sweater cover, for laundering. This cold also make a nice present to an animal for when the owner is away… a sweater with the owners scent on it for them to sleep with.

Did you handsew the pillow or use a machine? And what kind of stitch did you use?

I may have to try this. :) cheers!

Wonderful stuff! I've made many things with felted recycled sweaters, but I like the idea of just using them without felting. And I had to write because it made me laugh- that last teal pillow you have pictured . . . it used to be one of my favorite sweaters! I recognize it from Old Navy. Haha- just made me giggle. Thanks!

I see I am not the only one afraid of cutting into a sweater. Do you have any problems with the sweater having runs or ravaling and if so which ones would be a problem with that happening?
