Sweater Vest Refashion Tutorial

November 23, 2009 9:48 am

This one is too easy. Seriously.
I love the sweater vest look.

We’re going to make this one! (Isn’t it cuter, if I do say so myself?)
I got this sweater at my thrift store for $1.50.
We need to cut the sleeves off. I cut them right inbetween the seam where they are attached. That way it won’t unravel.
Cut both of them off. I didn’t need to finish the edges on mine, but if you do there are a couple ways you can do it. ONE: Fold the seam under and stitch it with your machine. TWO: Find some cool bias tape and attach that. You can even hand stitch it with embroidery thread for a very Free People look!

Cut the sleeves open.
After cutting them open cut the sleeves in half.

Trim them so they are equal width.
Sew them together. Depending on your waist size, you may need three or four strips.

Here is the finished product.

I love how the shoulders flare a bit.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

I am new to your blog (about a month now) and I am absolutely in love! I've only been sewing for a year now and have only done things for my girls (three like you). Finding all these fun refabs for adults…I feel like the heavens open with a AHHH, and I think, now that is a fabulous idea.

Hi there, I just found your blog via the posting on craftzine and I am so happy to have discovered it. I am an art student at UCSC so maybe one day we'll run into each other at the thrift store :) Anyway, thank you for all of the great tutorials, I will definitely be putting them to use. Have a great day.

    That is so cute!

I just have to tell you, that yesterday I decided to try a "re-fashion" like the "capelet/wrap" you posted awhile back. I was so proud of the way it turned out and thought it was very cute. Then, I made the mistake of asking my 9yo daughter and my husband, both of whom said a variation of "Ew! That's WEIRD!" and "That looks like something a homeless person would wear." I know! LAST time I ask their opinions!!! Hhhmmpphh.

I love how this sweater vest turned out!!! I was just mourning a cable knit sweater that seemed destined for charity, but it looks like I'll be able to keep it after all =)

I'm not so big on sleeveless myself (I have broad shoulders, and feel it makes me look very bulky!) but my 13 year old saw it and likes it! I foresee a Christmas present in her future ;)

BTW- I've nominated your blog for a Kreativ Blogger award! Visit my blog for instructions on what to do!

That is incredibly clever; especially your take on how to avoid unraveling. Awesome job!
