Hemline to Headband

March 9, 2010 8:41 pm

Yay! I found the time to post a little tutorial!

I have a TON of hemlines laying around. From all my t-shirt refashioning I’ve gathered about 30 of them. And I can’t throw them away. So I FINALLY cam up with something to do with them!

Last week a reader emailed me about making some of these amazing headbands. Now, mine don’t come close, but they inspired me.  Take a hemline from a shirt. Cut it nice and clean. Measure it so it reaches almost all the way around your head, minus 4 inches.

Get a piece of elastic 2.5 inches long. Insert it right in to your hemline headband.

Stitch it in place on each end with a zig-zag stitch. Here’s the base of your headband! How easy was that?

Now you can add to it whatever your little heart desires! I added this simple flower to one of the hemline headbands with three gold beads in the middle.

Here it is on.

I did some chiffon gathered flowers for this headband.

And on…

I’m one of those people that looks at headbands and other people and always loves them but never wears them myself.   So I don’t know if I’m brave enough to wear them out of the house. But I wore them while I cleaned out bathrooms today and it made me feel VERY glamorous.

Here are some flower tutorials I did that you could use to add to the headband:

Chiffon Flower

Large FLower

Flower Corsage

If you guys have any flower tutorials or cool things that you could add to the headbands, send me the link and I’ll post it here to share with everyone!

Don’t forget to vote for the “You name it- I’ll show you how to make it!” series. I love all the requests so far! Keep them coming!!

AND, I  (and by I, I mean Morgan, my amazing web designer from PDB) have added an email subscription option to the sidebar.

It took me 5 minutes. And you can add so much on to it! AND it’s really comfortable because it’s all stretch.

    I love this idea…
you should be braver though, and wear it outside the house as well, because they are really pretty and with a simple dress or simple outfit in general they are the perfect accessory. Flowers light up everything :o )

I am the same way with all “fashion” stuff. I love the looks but am not brave enough to wear them myself. I’m such a wuss!
    I love all the options.
Do you get your knit shirts from thrift stores?! I want to try making this! It seems simple enough right?…right?

No, I buy my knits new. I wouldn’t be opposed to getting them for myself at thrift stores, but I wouldn’t sell one I got at a thrift store. But I think that’s a great place to get a hemline for this. You could always use a knit t that you have already, too!

I LOVE this! I did two last night, and then put together a few flowers to pin on them. I didn’t even bother with the sewing, just used elastic through the whole thing and tied it together. I blogged about them. I really need to get a flickr account so I can post things there.
