Tuxedo Tank Tutorial
March 15, 2010 10:22 amHappy Monday! Here’s a quick little tank you can easily do! I’m still taking requests for the Anthropologie tutorial series, but I thought I’d do a little something in between. I was inspired by this shirt from Anthropologie:
And this is how my version came out:
I started of with this old shirt.
I cut off the sleeves and sewed them under.
Now, take your extra sleeves and cut into some thin strips.
I also used two other fabrics I had. Here’s the cast for my shirt…
Ruffle ‘em up.
Now for the placment: I started with the same fabric ruffles as my shirt and pinned it around the collar and down the center. Pin and sew.
Take the next strip. Pin and sew.
Take the next one… you get the picture!
Here’s my final product.
Now you’ve got an easy tank thats a GREAT layering piece.
Have a wonderful day!!

When you cut the sleeves off of a t-shirt, do you just turn them under and hem them? I have a few old t’s that I’s love to refashion, but I have never been sure what to do with the arm openings.

What do you do to the edges of your ruffles if they are not a jersey material? How do you keep them from fraying in the wash? THe fray-edge stuff?
You site and work is an inspiration!

Thank you! I either use the fray check, serge the ends(or you could do a zig zag stitch) or leave them and just let them fray. It all depends on the look you’re going for.

Ah! I just finished a variation of this shirt. I can’t wait until I know what I’m doing. I’m guessing it took me about 4 hours to sew a couple strips of fabric on the shirt! Thanks for your tutorial!

Hey this might be such an obvious question but, when you say “pin& sew” are you using a sewing machine or hand stitching? Thanks!
By Katie on Apr 4, 2011 | Reply
Did you hand sew these? Or use the machine?
