Not Just Your Plain Black T-Shirt

October 18, 2010 8:42 am

I love plain T’s. But here’s a way to add a little more to your average T.

Get your T- shirt of choice. This was one I tried to do this technique on the back that completely failed. Then I marked where I wanted to replace a panel. I started narrow at the top and made my panel wider towards the bottom…

You can see I wrapped it around to the front of the shirt.

Then cut that panel out. Here’s the shape of mine.

So basically you are going to replace  the panel with another piece of fabric, the texture and color are your choice. I chose to keep it black and to add texture by a shirred panel. I got a piece of fabric that would fit and gathered each side.  After doing this, cut it to the size of the missing panel. Pin it WELL and sew or serge in place.

Here’s how it will look.

I love the way this came out. It’s a little drapey, but only from the back. I love suprises on the back of shirts.

It’s an easy way to update a plain T-shirt  in to something just a little less plain. You can also see that I made my panel a little longer to create that draped effect.

Like it? And so easy, huh?

Very clever! I’m thinking if perhaps you did that in the front it would then work as a maternity top if it has a lot of stretch…. hmm.

I love this! It’s like “surprise!” after someone does a double take at you and you’re already far behind them.

I love this! It’d be a great way to replace a stained portion on an old shirt, or make it fit a bit better too! Love, Love!!

    Thanks for sharing!!

I have a few t-shirts that I bought with the idea that I would shrink into them. It’s been a few years and that hasn’t happened so I’m thinking that this idea would work well to make a too small t-shirt or any knit top or dress a little bigger, and make me a LOT happier.

I love this look. I’m getting ready to try your tutorial and am curious about the instruction for cutting new fabric piece to the shape of your cut out panel AFTER gathering sides. How do you keep the gathering in place? Thanks!!

You might like the work of Shingo Sato. This is very similar to his special style of draping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq9zunlyQ5U It’s mind-altering.
