Pattern Weights Tutorial

October 27, 2010 7:55 am

I was in desperate need of something to hold my patterns down with while I was cutting I always used random objects that were around- scissors, my phone, children’s toys… Then I realized! There’s an easier way! So I made a few pattern weights from random material laying around.

Here’s how. Cut two triangles, as shown. Turnt hem inside out and sew together along the edges leaving a small opening.

Then you can fill them with various things: dried beans, rice, popcorn kernels. sand…. I think I used bulgur wheat. How weird does that sound? I have bulgur wheat pattern weights.  Then just stitch up your hole by hand or machine. Then you end up with these pretty little ditties.

Let’s just stare at them because of their cuteness.

I hope you guys make some cute little patten weights. Even if you don’t use them they’re just fun to look at :)

Very cute. I’ve been meaning to pick up some large washers at the hardware store but this seems much easier (than taking children to store)

I was going to do the felt-covered industrial washers too, but this looks too cute to pass up!

    Adorable! Thank you!

Oh how brilliant you are! I almost bought a set at the fabric store last time I was there, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $25 for pattern weights… when I could spend that money on fabric! =0) Thanks for turning my creativity on. I was planning to make bean bags for my toddler for Christmas; I’ll just make a few weights for mommy while I’m at it!

They’re also good for keeping wrapping paper from curling back on itself when you’re trying to cut off a piece to wrap a gift!!

This is brilliant and cute at the same time. Thanks for the inspiration. These pattern weights are a must have for anyone who works with patterns. Saving this to my favorites just as a reminder. Thanks again!

You could sew little loops into the seam, and have a way to slide them onto a bar or something to keep them together.

These are so cute and handy. Thank you for this tutorial. I was considering buying pattern weights but the prices kept me away. Now, I can make my own. Thank you so much.

I am a very poor postgrad student and my university doesn’t have any weights available to us and it’s such a pain to have to lug heavy weights to and from class (we have no lockers either) so this a perfect cheap and lighter option. thanks! Might also try the washer idea.
