Upgrading a Black Blazer

October 14, 2010 6:15 am

I love the look of a black blazer. It’s a timeless look that can be dressed up or down.  It’s perfectly versatile.

I got this black blazer at Forever 21.

Since it was from F21 it lacked any details, but  I knew I could spruce it up.

I wanted to add some trip to the lapel and pockets. I chose dupioni silk because I didn’t want it too shiny. But you could use anything you prefer.

Sew it inside out then turn it inside out and press it so you have a nice flat piece with no exposed edges, about 1/2 in inch wide.

Begin pinning it on the inside of the lapel.

Do the same on the pockets.

Then just stitch it on. Try to just ‘stitch in the ditch’ of the preexisting topstitch.

I think it’s those subtle differences that make somethin much  nicer.

I love the black blazer!

I have LOTS of new tutorials I’m doing!

Stay tuned for them and for Friday Fall Fashion Puzzle tomorrow!

Upgrade looks cool. I’m surprised you didn’t use a pink silk for a ruffle, or a striped geometric look. hmmm something to think about :)

I don’t comment often on your site, but I read it all the time. I love checking in because it inspires me to keep creating.
    Thanks!

Beautiful. The blazer and necklace really dress up the white tee perfectly.

I love this idea. I have a black blazer I never wear because it seems to “stiff”! I’m thinking I might try something like this with my jacket but maybe do a ruffle….love it!

Are you the model? Love your ideas.

I read your tutorial for altering a leather jacket. Just as you said, it’s easy.
I bought a (small/black/kimono-sleeve/2-button ) mens leather jacket at “Sally Ann” for $13. It fit perfectly, except the sleeves were ugly. I intended to modify the sleeves but couldn’t find any tutorials/photos that made sense [I"m a "visual"person], and I was frustrated. I finally, found your website. Thank heavens!

Now what I want to do is easy/makes sense using your instructions.

    Thank you.
