Children’s Christmas Ruffle Skirt Tutorial

December 2, 2010 6:28 am

Here’s what the girls will be wearing for Christmas.  I made these super easy skirts from some of my favorite fabric from Harts. I did a pink version back when I just started blogging. I just washed and dried this fabric like normal. It doesn’t need any special care.

I love this fabric and it comes in all different colors. The best part is, I only needed one yard for all three skirts! So you don’t need to buy a ton of it. Go HERE for the big selection of the different colors they have.

Now, honestly, you can add a waistband and call it a day. But I wanted to do something a little more with these. Here’s what I did.

I got a piece of fabric that would work for the lining. Get 1.5 times your child’ waist size.

I wanted to add a coordinating ruffle on the bottom. So get a piece of fabric 2x the width of the lining fabric. Fold it in half and press.

After ruffling it, pin it to the hem of the lining.

Sew or serger in place.

Get your ruffle fabric (1.5 times your child’s waist size as well) and sew the side together to make the skirt. Then gather the waist of the lining and the ruffle fabric.

To make the wasitband get a piece of fabric a few inches longer than the child’s waist. Sew the ends together then press it in half.

Pin the lining to the ruffle fabric and the wasitband. Sew or serge leaving an opening for the elastic. Pull the elastic through and sew shut.

Then you’ve got these beautiful fancy skirts! (Do you see my oldest’s face? We had just had a MAJOR meltdown!)

I also made these coordinating headbands.

I hope you like this tutorial and can use it for your won girls. They make GREAT gifts, too!

Adorable! I made a similar skirt a while ago but have a Question. When you sew the skirt fabric together where do you place the seam where the ruffles fold together, back or side? I felt like it looked odd on mine with just one side of free flowing ruffles and the other a seam… what is your suggestion?
    Thanks!! :)

That’s a great question. What I do is sew/serge it from the bottom of the skirt. That way the ruffles are hanging upside down. Se up it that way so when you turn it back around they are hanging down . Does that make sense?

These are beautiful. I like that you used blue as appose to the usual red, gold, or green.

What a good idea to put the satin trim on! They are gorgeous! I tried buying some fabric but they were sold out so FYI I got mine at rufflefabric.com- they had the black and white like your navy. I’m trying to figure out your response to heather- you sew the ruffles upside down- is the seam on the back or the side?
    THanks!

Just got back from the LA Fashion District and found this fabric in many colors at many stores for $6/yard!! And that price is definitely negotiable. So, if you are ever in LA it is worth going down there. Amazing deals.

Wow, just found this site a couple days ago. Inspiring, dreamy, lovely. Since Heather’s question stumped me too for a few minutes, I feel compelled to post my “aha!” moment for future readers. Alexis (correct me if I’m wrong for any of the rest!) didn’t sew the ruffles on, she bought “pre-ruffled” fabric (hence the link.) But, if you did want to sew them on yourself (I do!) I think it would work if you sew up the seams of the fabric first then sew the ruffles around the skirt: right sides together, ruffle flipped up, sew it all the way around the skirt, ending up back where you began your stitching. When you’re done, flip ruffle back down and it hangs correctly (may need some pressing depending on fabric) Right?

So cute. What is the fabric that was used to create the ruffles. It looks like the edges are finished/curled…were they sewn?
