Cloth Napkins

January 4, 2011 9:53 am

So as you read, I’ve been a creative slump. I decided to just try doing some really simple projects that were mindless and fun. I’ve been wanting to make cloth napkins for a while so we don’t waste the paper ones at dinner (and so the girls stop wiping their hands all over their shirts). I got all my little scraps of fabric that I couldn’t really make clothes out of. I pieced them together then cut out 11 inch squares and sewed them back to back.

Now we have fun and bright clothe napkins to use at night.

I love all the pieces of fabric put together. I also love how each different scrap reminds me of something I made. I can tell you what I used each of those fabrics for.

It was a really fun and easy project. I feel my creative cup filling up a little more with each little project. I think I just needed to remember that not everything has to be super detailed and challenging. I found so much joy in sewing these simple little squares.

We’ve been using cloth napkins for about 2 years now. I couldn’t believe how much less we spent on paper supplies by just cutting that out! Yours look fabulous!

You read my mind. I just sorted through a whole stack of fabrics last night with the intention of turning them into napkins tonight.
Much nicer than using paper serviettes.

Awesome. I inherited a bunch of quilting fabric when my grandmother passed and haven’t been able to figure out what to do with it!

One thing I did do with my scraps is make a crayon holder for my daughter. They’re all over etsy if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Super easy, and super cute.

    Happy creating!

What a great idea! A super way to use scraps that might otherwise overwhelm the sewing room.

Awesome idea! We have been using cloth napkins for quite a while now–they don’t even compare to paper! For some reason I was stuck on solid colors so I didn’t think to make some out of the scrap fabric I have. I will most certainly add this to my never-ending list of projects to do!

my daughter was home for the week after Christmas and we were discussing the cloth napkins i always made when she was growing up…we lamented the number of paper towels and napkins that we go through on a regular basis…she has five boys so her lament was worse than mine…have been looking through my stash for napkin fabrics…my stash suddenly became more interesting after reading your post…and it grew dramatically!
