Shades of Grace

May 16, 2011 6:34 pm

Meet Grace. One of my sister’s best friends and an adopted sister to us all. Grace is full of life, joy and enthusiasm for whatever she’s doing. We love having her in our lives.

Grace loves dresses. She has stories about all these dresses she’s found through the years. When she was here to visit I started thinking about all her many dresses. They aren’t “in style” but they’re so her and each one looks like it was made to fit per perfectly. They’re her own style and that’s what makes them perfect for her.

It just got me thinking more about “style”. When it comes down to it, who cares, really? What I love about Grace is she wears what she loves and it looks great on her. Every time I see her in one of her dresses it makes me smile. They all have so much character, just like her.  I wish I would have gotten more pictures of her in them. She has so many!

Then she puts the cutest little shoes with them every time. The whole look just makes you smile.

To me, it’s what style and clothing is meant to do- show who you are. Not showing the latest trends or what’s “in”.

I think what I like about the way Grace dresses is it doesn’t put emphasis on the “stuff”.

It brings Grace out. And what’s more important than that?

I totally agree on what style should mean. I think that that’s why I feel a little overwhelmed with all the stuff on the internet about fashion and sewing. Some of this technically amazing stuff just doesn’t feel like stuff I’d go for. I want to try it as a skill-builder, but I don’t know if I really like tons of embellishments on tees or loud prints all of the time. Or even dresses. But thank goodness for people like Grace who just know how to be themselves. Thanks!

I especially like Grace in the green polka dot dress with her gorgeous hair!!!!
Now that I’m almost 40 yrs old, I finally understand and actually wear what I’m most comfortable in, which is usually denim (still). I love my jeans :)

AMEN to that! I think fashion is ALL ABOUT what makes you feel, good, fresh and happy. Being confident and comfortable in your clothes makes the clothes come alive. I can’t wear a blazer at all. I see them on other people and they look great, but I just flat out feel like I’m playing dress up in my mothers clothes and I can’t sell it. You have to be YOU and be a true to you! I’m a hair stylist and I feel exactly the same way with hairstyles. I like to have bigger, happier hair and it works for me, because I love it and I own it. Fashion is a clear case of “to each their own”. That is what makes it fun.

I totally agree. “style” is about showcasing YOU, not about showcasing the latest fad. :) Lovely post and lovely Grace!
