I’m a Copy Cat

December 11, 2009 9:29 am

When I saw Jessica’s trees at Oh So Happy Together, I HAD to make them. They are so whimsical and colorful! Mine didn’t turn out half as cute…
… but here’s my version.
I used some alternating cottons in the same color tones.

I love them. They’re my favorite Christmas decoration so far!

Now here’s my question. I really want to make some little scene out of this, like a little enchanted forest with characters or some other props. I need ideas. Anyone have any thoughts??

Christmas Decorations

December 7, 2009 5:06 pm

There’s something I love about homemade Christmas decorations. I love when they look a little ‘off-beat’. I’m not sure why because I don’t feel that way about many things I make. I love the child’s touch on things. So here are a couple of our decorations this year.

First is our name on cardboard painted gold with glitter, hanging from an archway.

I made flags for every holiday. I love the way they add so much and are so festive.
I hang them all over.

Next is our sparkly table.

It has gold painted pine-cones in a glass cloche and gold leaves in a glass canister.(sadly I had no white Christmas lights which would have looked FAR better, but oh well)
It has evergreens with sparkly little birds and snowflakes hanging on the wall (dollar tree!)
And last, but definitely not least, baby Jesus in swaddling clothes. Someday I’d love to get one of those pretty porcelain ones. But for now, a household doll does the job because the girls take him down every moment of the day to take care of him. And who could say no to my girls wanting to love and care for baby Jesus??

Christmas Photo Shoot

November 29, 2009 9:04 pm

We did our Christmas photos with our amazing friend and photographer, Emmy. She came up with this amazing idea to do little stars on chalkboard cloth that I got at Harts. I made these outfits for the girls just for the shoot and for Christmas.

Isabel’s was red silk tiered with a red silk bow.

Ava’s was different shades of pink silk, chiffon and cotton sateen.

Cuddling Ava.

Loving sisters.

Giselle’s was ruffle upon ruffle of pink and coral jersey.

This was the outfit I made for myself. It is a peach colored, high necked shirt with pleats and a linen paper bag waist skirt with deep pockets. ( this was one of my new designs and I have it coming in a real photo shoot soon!!)

And here is my sweet husband and I.

And here is our sweet friend we owe it all to. I know you’ve seen her amazing blog, Grieving Gracefully. Take a look for some beautiful words and stunning visuals that imparts wisdom far beyond her years.

Now, just trying to choose which one for our card. Any favorites????

A Moment to Honor Fall

November 11, 2009 3:24 pm

I can not believe how early all the Christmas things are out already! It makes me a little crazy. So I’d like to take a moment to share one of our fall activities this year.

One of my favorite books is “The Ox-Cart Man”. I love the simplicity of the story ad all the illustrations. Has anyone else read it??

This is one of my favorite pages where he is traveling to go sell his things. The girls and I decided to create our own fall ox-cart man scene that we would begin working on this year then add to it each year.

Here’s what we came up with. We got a 6 foot piece of felt and have been slowly working on it. We’ve added mountains, a road made out of old denim, his house on the left, a church, a lake and a tree, and then we added another house with little birds overhead.
This is the tree that we made with scrap fabric. I really wanted to use old fabrics to add interest and dimension to it.

This is the lake. I used strips of different fabric, one on top of the next.

It’s been so fun to work on.

This is something I did last year that we hang up at Thanksgiving time.

Tell me your fall decorating ideas. I’d love to be inspired!

Halloween Costumes

October 31, 2009 8:46 pm

Meet Minnie Mouse.

Despite the Snow White costume I made Ava for her birthday, she asked to be Minnie Mouse for Halloween. So I made this dress for her.

It had a thick satin waistband and bright red polka dot print. I like the dress so much I might make a normal one!

Silly girl!

Love this picture. She decided she wanted to be Minnie Mouse meets Tinkerbell (hence the wings).
I didn’t make anything for Giselle. I just put her in this little dress someone gave us. She was too little to care whether mama made it or not. She looked like such a big girl to me :(

I could eat her.

These two crack me up! Look at those faces!

Isabel asked to be Ariel since her best friend was the same. My friend took pictures of the Ariel costume while she was in Disneyland then made one so I used hers as a prototype.

Swimming in the sea…

…as happy as can be.

We enjoyed the fun of the day!
