The Ava Frock

January 10, 2011 12:13 pm

Hello Monday! Today I’m going to show you how to make this simple girl’s dress. I’ve been trying to use up fabric I have laying around here so I came up with the Ava Frock.

For the first step, you’re going to cut out the bodice piece. Cut it out in length from the neckline to the waist. Leave it a few inches wider than your child’s torso.

Next, cut the sleeves. We’re going to gather the neckline, so the sleeves act as an exaggerated neckline. The rise up past the neckline of the bodice. Your pieces should look like this.

Next sew the sleeves to the bodice top.

How To Ruffle Fabric With Your Sewing Machine

December 15, 2010 12:11 pm

I think the number one question I get is how to ruffle fabric. I thought I would show you how I do it with my sewing machine. There are different ways to do it, by hand or with a  basting stitch, but this is my favorite way. Not all machines will do this. If you have a very inexpensive machine the tension and stitch length might not be capable of this. But my first brother machine did it, so most of yours will. Here’s how to make an easy ruffle.

Locate on your machine your tension dial and your setting for the length of the stitch. These are my settings.

First, set your stitch length to the longest stitch. Mine is 6.

Then set your tension to the tightest tension, or the highest number.

Now you should be all set.

When you stitch away it will automatically ruffle.

A couple notes- you will come to see that different fabrics ruffle more or less than others. You can control how ruffly you want the fabric to be with your length and tension.  You can make something more ruffled by the tightest tension and the longest stitch, or for just a slight ruffle, use looser tension and a shorter stitch. You’ll learn the settings you like  for knits, cottons, upholstery etc…

Hope you enjoyed an easy way to ruffle!

The Aria Dress

November 29, 2010 10:58 am

Last week I showed you this post of the beginning stages of a dress I had made. Here is the completed product, The Aria Dress.

I really wanted to capture the movement of this dress in the photo shoot.

I gotta say, my sister rocked that shoot! I was so impressed with her!

Here are some plain old closeups of the dress. I made this out of white, soft jersey than hand painted it with tea. I wanted it to have a barely there color.

It also has pockets.

The top has a slimming middle detail with rouching at the bodice.

The back has this detail.

I. Love. This. Dress.

Covered in Love

November 23, 2010 4:59 pm

If you’ve ever ordered anything from me, you’ll notice that on the back of my hang tags is this handwritten statement.

It’s incredible important to me so I wanted to share what it means to me. I just took an excerpt from an article that was written about me. It sums it up.

“On the back of her “Lex” labels on any garment or handbag, there are the words “Covered in Love.” Meschi explains that more than a year ago a friend’s mother was dying of cancer, and she helped make a blanket to comfort that woman during her remaining weeks alive. “It was the first time that I made something that I prayed for the person the whole time,” she says. “I prayed that each stitch, each moment I spent on that blanket would be lifted as a prayer for her and her family. In the bottom of the blanket I embroidered, ‘Covered in Love.’ That blanket ended up being a very important piece for the family during the death process and later during the healing process. It put a meaning to what I was doing. Ever since then, I vowed that whenever I was sewing something, I would pray the entire time for the person I was making it for, whether it be someone I know or not. And I really carry the hope that whoever buys one of my garments is somehow blessed by the love and prayers I put in to it. It gives the fashion meaning.”

Often times my work as a mother seems insignificant in the scope of the  world. My little  sewing business seems like such a tiny job. But I’m coming to realize to find joy in where I’m at in life and that the small things have immense purpose. “It is not how much we do,  but how much love we put in that action.” (Mother Theresa)

I hope that whatever you do, whatever job, chore, action you are involved in that you make it mean something to you and to others around you. It makes the seemingly  minuscule  things in life immensely significant.
