Easy, Elegant Teacher’s Gift

June 3, 2011 9:12 am

Hello blog land! I’m back! This move was a hard one for me, probably with the girls being older and having more things and being possessive of where they all go. But we’re mostly settled in now. I can’t wait to show you some pictures when things are all squared away!

For my daughter’s teacher’s gift this year I knew I wanted to make her teacher an elegant scarf. I went to Harts Fabric (of course) and found this gorgeous Italian fabric. It’s a cotton/wool blend and was absolutely stunning. (Here’s a few other prints in the same type of fabric.)

I bought 3/4 a yard and cut it in half to make two pieces that I sewed together. Then I did a rolled hem all the way around the scarf.

Then I added this pretty floral lace trim around the two ends. I added it to both sides of the ends so you would see it no matter how the scarf was laying.

Here’s the finished scarf.

It makes a beautiful gift for someone (or one for yourself). The total cost of the project was about $10!

Have a beautiful weekend. I’m back Monday with a beautiful giveaway!

New at Harts Fabric

January 15, 2011 8:51 am

I’m alwyas so proud to say Harts Fabric is my local fabric store. I’m so lucky. I know. Anyhow, they’ve always carried one of the best selections of fabric. But one of their new improvements is they’re really bumping up their fashion apparel fabrics! (For their fashion and apparel page, click here) They have rows and rows of new, amazing apparel fabrics.

For all those clothing makers out there, I have to show you my favorites. First is this knit. It’s thicker and a little creamier than shown and I’m crazy over it!

Next, look at this one! Perfect for accents or a beautiful gown!

I think this print and color palette is great! It’s a voile so the feel of the fabric is perfect for garments.

Check out their huge ruffle fabric choices. You know I’m a big fan of this stuff and do you see the new black wave fabric front and center? I’m dreaming of a cocktail dress made from this.

They have the best selection of knits. These linen knits are to die for.

I really love this double sided knit in orange and grey.

Lastly, this lace is stunning. It’s the perfect pattern and color.

Check out their website for new things daily. Honestly, they’re the best.  You can also join their Facebook page to see new fabrics and specials.

Don’t forget to enter to win a yogurt maker.

Children’s Christmas Ruffle Skirt Tutorial

December 2, 2010 6:28 am

Here’s what the girls will be wearing for Christmas.  I made these super easy skirts from some of my favorite fabric from Harts. I did a pink version back when I just started blogging. I just washed and dried this fabric like normal. It doesn’t need any special care.

I love this fabric and it comes in all different colors. The best part is, I only needed one yard for all three skirts! So you don’t need to buy a ton of it. Go HERE for the big selection of the different colors they have.

Now, honestly, you can add a waistband and call it a day. But I wanted to do something a little more with these. Here’s what I did.

I got a piece of fabric that would work for the lining. Get 1.5 times your child’ waist size.

I wanted to add a coordinating ruffle on the bottom. So get a piece of fabric 2x the width of the lining fabric. Fold it in half and press.

After ruffling it, pin it to the hem of the lining.

Sew or serger in place.

Get your ruffle fabric (1.5 times your child’s waist size as well) and sew the side together to make the skirt. Then gather the waist of the lining and the ruffle fabric.

To make the wasitband get a piece of fabric a few inches longer than the child’s waist. Sew the ends together then press it in half.

Pin the lining to the ruffle fabric and the wasitband. Sew or serge leaving an opening for the elastic. Pull the elastic through and sew shut.

Then you’ve got these beautiful fancy skirts! (Do you see my oldest’s face? We had just had a MAJOR meltdown!)

I also made these coordinating headbands.

I hope you like this tutorial and can use it for your won girls. They make GREAT gifts, too!

Fashionably New Fabrics

June 3, 2010 8:03 am

I can’t wait to show you some of my new favorite fabrics from Harts Fabrics!

These four are terrycloth Juicy Couture fabrics. They are so beautiful in person, you have no idea! They are perfect for endless projects for the summer. And they are only $11.99/yard. For JUICY!!!

I used Juicy Couture fabric last year to create these smocked dresses for the girls. (Pictures HERE tutorial HERE)

Next is something BRAND NEW. We all know tiny floral prints are HUGE this season and they are going to carry into the fall to be paired with military inspired jackets, 40′s style skirts and so many more. Harts is now carrying a line of rayon dress prints starting at $9.99/yrd! These are just 4 of the ones they have but they are gorgeous and perfect to keep you up to date with your personal sewing projects.

Harts is also really upping their line of eco and organic fabrics. I love the subtlety of the colors and prints. Here are a few of my favorites:

Harts also has some wonderful outdoor fabrics for summer.

This is the thing I’ve always loved about Harts. They are AHEAD of the trends. They carry things that you’ll see in the upcoming seasons, not just last season’s hits. You can be sure to find fashion-forward materials there to keep your projects updated.
