White Stripes Pillow Tutorial

March 18, 2011 8:15 am

I needed a little change on our bed so I decided to make a pillow from some leftover scraps I had. It’s no surprise, I adore white and all shades of it. I love the changes in texture of this pillow. Here’s what I did. I cut a euro sham sized pieces (26×26 completed, so add a little extra) of fabric. I got lots of different strips of fabric and pinned them to the pillow, overlapping them slightly.

Continue all along the pillowcase.

Sew the strips down, about 1/2 an inch in.

Next what I did was sew the opposit way, like a grid. I alternated the direction I was going to it would create even more texture. It created little folds of the edge of the fabric.

For the back, cut out two pieces, one slightly longer than the other. After topstitching the edges, place them, on top of the cover of your sham, right side down. Make sure one lays over the other about two inches. Then stitch the pillow all the way around.

Here’s the finished pillow.

I love all the texture in it and how it brings in all the different shades of white that were already on  my bed.

You could do this with so many different colors and it’s a great way to use extra fabric!

Have a beautiful weekend!

Infinity Scarf Tutorial

January 17, 2011 3:52 pm

I love soft infinity scarves. I wanted to try to make one with things I already had around so I came up with this one from unwanted T’s. It’s so easy!

Grab some T’s that you don’t use anymore. You can vary the color and patterns for the more daring. But I like, personally, like to stick to the same color tones.

Cut them up into pieces. They can be different lengths but make sure they are the same width.

Sew them together into an infinity scarf.

Then to make it a little more special I hand embroider a contrasting stitch at the seams. Find your seams and fold them over so the part you sewed is concealed.

Then just do a stitch along the seam. I know nothing about embroidery so I don’t even know what kind of stitch this is called :)

I did them at all the seams and here’s how it looks.

Here’s another version I did in all pink with a  cream colored stitch.

I looooovve this scarf!

And Bel likes hers, too.

Cloth Napkins

January 4, 2011 9:53 am

So as you read, I’ve been a creative slump. I decided to just try doing some really simple projects that were mindless and fun. I’ve been wanting to make cloth napkins for a while so we don’t waste the paper ones at dinner (and so the girls stop wiping their hands all over their shirts). I got all my little scraps of fabric that I couldn’t really make clothes out of. I pieced them together then cut out 11 inch squares and sewed them back to back.

Now we have fun and bright clothe napkins to use at night.

I love all the pieces of fabric put together. I also love how each different scrap reminds me of something I made. I can tell you what I used each of those fabrics for.

It was a really fun and easy project. I feel my creative cup filling up a little more with each little project. I think I just needed to remember that not everything has to be super detailed and challenging. I found so much joy in sewing these simple little squares.

Ribbon Front Cardigan

December 9, 2010 9:31 am

A lot of you asked about the girl’s sweaters from the Christmas Ruffle Skirt. I didn’t make any of them but I updated this one.

Here’s how: I sued this plain cardigan from Target that was on sale for $5.

Get some satin fabric or just satin ribbon. I got a piece and sewed it together on one side then turned it right side out. Make it double the length you want to border.

Press it flat and pin it around the border of the cardigan in little folds.

Pin it the entire way around.

Then just sew it down the center. Now you have a slightly fancier little cardigan!

I had a little leftover so I made a little bow for this cardigan, too. I just set it on pins so it can be removed for washing.

Not Just Your Plain Black T-Shirt

October 18, 2010 8:42 am

I love plain T’s. But here’s a way to add a little more to your average T.

Get your T- shirt of choice. This was one I tried to do this technique on the back that completely failed. Then I marked where I wanted to replace a panel. I started narrow at the top and made my panel wider towards the bottom…

You can see I wrapped it around to the front of the shirt.

Then cut that panel out. Here’s the shape of mine.

So basically you are going to replace  the panel with another piece of fabric, the texture and color are your choice. I chose to keep it black and to add texture by a shirred panel. I got a piece of fabric that would fit and gathered each side.  After doing this, cut it to the size of the missing panel. Pin it WELL and sew or serge in place.

Here’s how it will look.

I love the way this came out. It’s a little drapey, but only from the back. I love suprises on the back of shirts.

It’s an easy way to update a plain T-shirt  in to something just a little less plain. You can also see that I made my panel a little longer to create that draped effect.

Like it? And so easy, huh?
