Will Trade for Fashion

January 24, 2011 11:06 am

Hello! This weekend we drove to San Francisco to celebrate my husband’s 30th. We had an amazing time and I had to share these pictures from our hotel, The Mark Hopkins InterContinental.

Here it was at night.

And in the morning.

The city was beautiful! We had an unbelievable dinner at Gary Danko. We only live an hour away and it’s such a fun little getaway. I was also grateful to come back to our little town. It confirmed we’re not city people. Flashing yellow traffic lights? What do they mean? I’m still stumped…

On to today’s topic- selling unwanted clothes. I’m sure most of us have some kind of consignment or used clothing store in our town. We have quite a few here in Santa Cruz County. My favorite is Crossroads Trading Company. Over the last couple years I’ve really tried to simplify my closet and get rid of stuff. I used to enjoy having lots of stuff in my closet. For shallow reasons, it made me feel good. Now I like to have less and less, but things that I wear often and really enjoy. So when I gather a few items that I don’t use that much I’ll go sell it at our used clothing store. The great thing about a lot of places is they don’t just take designer stuff, they take vintage, unique things. They also take a lot of things that I’ve made that I haven’t liked enough to show you or sell! When I go thrift store shopping  I’ll also keep an eye out for good catches that I know I can sell. And most places you can get cash or trade. While I love doing trades, I normally have my girls with me and sorting through racks and racks of clothes just doesn’t happen. But I always look at the shoes! It’s much easier and I don’t have to try anything on. So this weekend I thought  a new pair of shoes would be nice to have to take to SF. I grabbed a bag full of extra stuff I had…

… exchanged it for $50 in cash and these shoes for $13. You know how on my wish list I was looking for nude shoes? I was thrilled to see these in my size!

And when I saw the profile, I was sold! I love that unexpected, unique heel.

I also love the slim look from the back and the sweet ankle strap. I wore these with black leggings, a T and leather jacket. It was a very simple outfit with great shoes. One of my favorite outfits!

So get creative with your fashion! Since the expenses of children and life,  I don’t put much money into clothes and fashion items anymore. I really try to get as creative as possible when it comes to spending in that area. Trading is a great way to do it!  I hope I’ve encouraged you to scout out consignment or trade stores in your area!!

Valentino Heels How To

February 15, 2010 10:31 am

This is my version of, “Often imitated, never (not even close to being) duplicated.”

Valentino has swooned me this season. Take a look at their spring/summer collection. It’s mind-blowing. I want it all. Just look at these shoes! If I had lots of money, I’d take all of them. But I don’t. So I’m taking the inspiration and refashioning some of my own.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Shoes

Hot glue gun

Fabric squares

A Pen

Ok, So start with some heels, preferably some with some surface area to add things to. And a really high heel. I don’t think these shoes would look great with all their add ons if the heel was low.

The next step is to cut up some squares. I used black polyester lining because it tears into pretty feathery looking pieces. But you could use silk, chiffon, etc… Cut them, roughly, about 1.5 inches squared.

Get the tip of a pen and fold one piece over, as shown.

Add a drop of hot glue to the point of the pen where the fabric is.

Push it on your shoe where you want to cover it.

It will look like this. To make a nice, full look, you need to place them really close together so they stand up.

Just keep adding and adding until the entire front of the shoe (or wherever you wan to cover it) is rounded and full.

I didn’t want to leave the rest of the shoes just in the plain leather. I thought it was too much of a contrast and the front looked obviously added on. So we’re going to create some fabric texture on the rest of the shoe. So get some more fabric square. Make these slightly smaller.

Start glueing them on in layers. Sort of like scales.

You want the edges to stand out a bit. Cover the rest of the shoes like this

Here’s my final product.

Obsessed.

Like, I just wore them around the house while I changed poopy diapers, made dinner, and gave he girls bath’s, obsessed.

Can you see the subtle texture in the back?

Here it all is, shown in it’s lovely glory.

Foot candy.

If you make it, I WANT TO SEE IT. So send pictures to the flickr pool so we can all see!

Like em?
