Draped in Cashmere- A Decadent Scarf Tutorial

November 18, 2009 6:25 am

I finally did it! I found my first cashmere sweater at the thrift store! I was THRILLED when I found it! I’ve been looking for one for a long time.
I’m going to show you how to make it into this!
If you don’t have a cashmere sweater, any lightweight material will do.
The first thing I did was cut off my bottom ribbing.

Now cut it into equal strips, however your sweater will allow you to. Here’s how I portioned mine out.

I opened the sleeves so I could use them, too.

Here were the strips I ended up with.
Sew half of your strips together in one long piece. Do the other half separately. Then pin the two long strips together so it gets doubly wide. Stitch together.
What I did next, I forgot to photograph. I used hem tape to seal the edges. You can use that, extra sweater material or fold it over and stitch.

Here’s what it will look like. As you can see, I made a grid on the photo to show where we are going to gather it. I did it about every 8 inches horizontally, then about 2 inches from each edge.

With this knit, you can just gather it by gathering while you sew. As you can see, I just shoved pieces together and stitch it with a straight stitch. Its very easy and doesn’t take much time.

Here’s what it looks like after I did the horizontal stitches then the first vertical stitch.

If you want to add a little more, you can use extra sweater material to create a fringe.
Just sew them on to the end of your scarf. (It was a little too much on mine, but it’s an option!)

Here’s how it turned out…

I love the rufflyness of it. It looks like an extravagant collar.

Another thing you can do is add a button as a closure. I added it to one side then used some string to hold it in place. That way I can fold the scarf off tot he side and have it stay in place.

Don’t you just want to curl up in this??

I know this was two scarves in a row, but I had to post this one immediately because I’ve really been enjoying it.
More warm weather tutorial coming this week!

Sweater Scarf Refashion Tutorial

November 16, 2009 8:35 pm

I love cozying up in a scarf. There’s something so comforting about one. I can’t have enough!
I really wanted one with pockets on the ends.

Here’s a very simple tutorial for this chic and unique sweater scarf.

I snagged this cable knit sweater at the thrift store.

I cut out the first strip from the side with the buttons. I HAD to leave the buttons on there because they were so pretty and I thought it would make a really different look.
Then I cut out a strip on the other side in the same width.
I used the back of the sweater for 2 more equal width strips.
I sewed them all together and made sure that my pieces with pockets were on the ends. I could tell this sweater was not going to unravel. But if yours might, you can fold it under and stitch it, add some bias tape or some extra trim from the sweater.
And in just a few minutes- You’ll have this!

I like how different it looks and I like that it still has the buttons and button holes because you can button it different ways for a cool look.

Sweater Pillow Tutorial

June 11, 2009 4:03 pm

Here’s a great and easy tutoiral to make a knit sweater pillow. I had seen a bunch of these at different stores but they were so expensive. But sewing on knit always daunted me. But I tried it and, I’m telling you, it’s easy! I think it’s a great way to take a sweater of someone you love and memorialize them or an old sweater of your childs that you just can’t give away. So here’s what we’re going to do. Get whichever sweater you want.

Cut off the sleeves and any excess you may need to to create straight lines all the way around.

Turn the sweater inside out and pin it ALL the way around. We are going to sew all four sides shut because we will just stuff it from the front buttons. After pinning, Sew all four sides.

Turn the pillow right side out and open the buttons.

Get some stuffing and stuff the pillow as full as you like it.

Now, button the pillow back up.

Here’s what it looks like!!

Didn’t it turn out beautiful!! And it took me 15 minutes!

Here’s the first one I did that’s on my bed.

I hope you all like this project! Let me know what you think!
